Originally, the hospital in Mbozi was known as the Moravian Church Hospital and was founded by the Moravian Church in 1961. This hospital was a further development of the maternity clinic and attached orphanage founded by Sr. Elizabeth Senft in 1948. Then in 1960, under Rev. Hartmut Beck, additional buildings were constructed.
In 1974, the government approved the use of the hospital as a district hospital until 2001.

Since 2001, the hospital is again in the hands of the Moravian Church in the Southwest Province of Tanzania, since the state gave it back. The Moravian Church in Southwest Tanzania operates it on a voluntary basis to provide medical care to the people in the region.

The Project

The hospital includes several specialties: The dental department, a diabetic clinic, departments of obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology (mainly conjunctivitis), and surgery and internal medicine.
A psychological consultation hour is offered. The hospital has a physiotherapy department as well as its own pharmacy with infusion department and provides information or treatment for HIV/AIDS.

The hospital chaplaincy organizes regular morning devotions and Sunday services. Patients are visited by the clinic chaplains, who offer assistance, counseling and pastoral care.

In general, there is a shortage of doctors in Tanzania and the government employs the available doctors primarily in state hospitals. Experiences in Tanzania show that the lack of doctors and their local specialists cannot guarantee the quality and sustainability of health care.
Until February 2022, the hospital was supported by the German physician Dr. Jens Marcus Albrecht on behalf of Herrnhuter Missionshilfe.

The clinic includes an orphanage with a capacity of up to 12 children.

Target groups

Mbozi Mission Hospital is one of the five hospitals in the Songwe region with a capacity of about 150 beds and serves about 179,000 people in the catchment area.
The hospital has a high quality standard and is therefore visited by patients from all parts of the region as well as from other nearby regions.

The hospital treats every sick person, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity and nationality, as far as human, material and financial resources are available.

Another target group is the hospital staff and doctors, who are to receive education and training.

Project goals

Health care in the region around Mbozi Hospital is improving sustainably in terms of quality and structure.

Women have access to good care during pregnancy and childbirth.

HIV/AIDS prevention and care for sick people

Medical equipment and medicines are to be procured in sufficient quantities.

Activities

Training in the area of AIDS/HIV and gender

Informing the population about sexually transmitted diseases, contraception, unwanted pregnancy and family planning

Support for needy people in food security, the administration of medicines and advice on income-generating measures

Health education, prevention in schools, treatment of diseases, counseling of orphans and vulnerable children and adolescents

Project progress

In order to ensure the long-term future of the hospital, several measures have been planned or implemented.

Renovation work was carried out and an intensive care unit was realized.

The waiting areas were equipped with a roof, walls, an entrance area and concrete benches for sitting or lying down.

Due to the bad road conditions and the inconvenient accessibility of the hospital, a shuttle service is to be offered, which drives to the waiting areas 2x daily.

Project 1220 Mbozi Hospital

Isoko Hospital in the district of Ileje was built and founded in 1950 as a hospital dispensary. In 1961, it was converted into a hospital with 50 beds. Today, the hospital has about 120 beds and employs a total of about 90 people. This facility provides the population in this poorly accessible area with the basic medical care they need. Isoko is a fully equipped facility with an operating room, a mother and child department with obstetrics and gynecology, emergency room, isolation ward and tuberculosis ward, an HIV clinic and a dental department.

The Project

In general, there is a shortage of doctors in Tanzania and the government employs the available doctors primarily in state hospitals. Experiences in Tanzania show that the quality and sustainability of health care cannot be guaranteed due to a lack of doctors and their local specialists. Herrnhuter Missionshilfe has therefore organized a foreign mission for a German gynecologist who has been on assignment there since 2020.

Project goals

Health care in the region around Isoko Hospital is improving sustainably in terms of quality and structure.

Women have access to good care during pregnancy and childbirth.

Medical equipment and medicines are to be procured in sufficient quantities.

Activities

Foreign assignment of a German gynecologist

Trainings in the field of AIDS/HIV, gender and environment

Project progress

In order to ensure the long-term future of the hospital, several measures are planned or implemented. A gynecologist from Germany supported the hospital from 2021 to 2024 in the form of a foreign assignment (final report here). The procurement of new and effective drugs as well as medically valuable equipment urgently needs to be advanced. The employees in all departments should also be regularly trained and supported in the areas of HIV/AIDS, gender and the environment.

Projekt 1120 Isoko Hospital

The human right to the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health was formulated by the UN (United Nations) in 1966. It includes the safe and timely availability and accessibility of good quality health services to ensure basic care for major diseases. However, due to socio-political and economic conditions, many people in Africa still do not have access to modern medicine. Injustice and disadvantage are a reality. Especially in rural regions, there is a lack of good health facilities.

The core areas of Herrnhuter Missionshilfe's work have been defined as health work, strengthening health systems and improving the supply of medicines. For example, health care facilities have been established in areas with poor transportation so that the population can receive basic medical care such as treatment for acute illnesses or education (AIDS/HIV) when needed.

Herrnhuter Missionshilfe is strongly committed to health in cooperation with foundations and local organizations. It supports nursing schools where midwives, nurses, and orderlies are trained. Pharmacies and access to medical equipment and medicines are also promoted. Education and prevention are further important measures to contain diseases and to learn how to deal with them. The institutions supported by Herrnhuter Missionshilfe are repeatedly faced with the great challenge of having to procure or modernize medical equipment, renovate buildings or adapt premises.

All people in the respective regions benefit from the support in the area of health. The aim is to provide care for everyone who is ill, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or nationality, insofar as human, material and financial resources are available. Another target group is the respective staff and doctors, who are to receive seminars, training and continuing education.
