Help for children - sponsorships & scholarships

What are sponsorships? What are scholarships?
Herrnhuter Missionshilfe offers various aid programs in different countries to support children and young people and provide them a good education. With a sponsorship you take responsibility for a specific child (with name), which you can accompany on the educational path. We try to keep the contact between you and the child. You will receive 2-3 letters from your child and can also send letters and/or photos yourself through Herrnhuter Missionshilfe. Through scholarships (formerly also called orphan projects) you make it possible for children from poor families and orphans to go to school or get an education. In doing so, you give a child hope for a better life. For many children these scholarships are necessary and the only chance for a more promising future.

The Moravian Church operates schools in Rajpur/Dehradun and in remote Leh in northern India. For many children and young people in these regions, it is the only opportunity to receive a good education. The majority of these young people come from socially disadvantaged families or no longer have parents. Herrnhuter Missionshilfe supports pupils of the Moravian Institute in North India with a sponsorship program. Currently 25 children and young people are supported by sponsor parents.
With your support of 30,00 Euro per month you help one of the children to continue attending school. With this you ensure the supply of school materials, the journey with the school bus, regular meals as well as accruing examination fees. In addition, you can also increase your monthly contribution to cover costs such as medical care. We will send you a letter 2-3 times a year and, if possible, a photo of your sponsored child. Contact from your side is possible at any time and will be handled by Herrnhuter Missionshilfe.
With individual donations you support the education project and enable short-term help for particularly needy children. For further information or if you are interested in a sponsorship, please contact the responsible contact person in Bad Boll directly.

The Atsikana Walani Technical College in Malawi offers young women a safe place to live and the opportunity for vocational training. Many of the trainees come from the UNHCR refugee camp Dzaleka. With a sponsorship, you enable a girl from the Dzaleka camp or the surrounding villages to receive vocational training at Walani College. It covers the costs of training, accommodation, food, basic medical care, school materials and access to clean water. Our local partners look after the women during their 12-month training. As a sponsor, you accompany a young woman during this time and receive letters and photos. The cost of a sponsorship is 60 euros per month. But even smaller amounts can help. Giving children a future - with Scholarships

Scholarships
The economic situation in Tanzania and Zambia is poor and unemployment is high. Youth unemployment in particular is a major problem. Almost two-thirds of the employable population are young people, and just under a quarter of them are unemployed, according to World Bank estimates. Many of them live in great poverty, have hardly any access to schooling or even vocational training. Their chances of leading independent lives and finding ways out of poverty and dependence are slim.
Sound vocational training is therefore also the basis for a start in the job market and enables young people to earn their own living. Young people's self-esteem is strengthened by earning their own money and it enables them to live in dignity. A school scholarship enables young people to attend a vocational training center independently of outside support. Well-equipped workshops enable practical instruction and initial work experience. As a result of improved, state-recognized vocational training and basic equipment (tool kit) to start their careers, the graduates find work or become self-employed and earn their own living. The self-confidence of the young people is strengthened and youth unemployment is thus combated.
The same is true for a solid school education. Here, too, there are scholarships that support children from poor backgrounds, catch them up, provide for them and prepare them for a better future.
The cost of a two-year vocational school scholarship including a "tool kit" at a vocational training center in Tanzania or Zambia is 1,000 euros. The cost for a one-year school scholarship is 480 euros.

Project 1050 Scholarships
Through the scholarship programs (formerly called orphan programs), children and young people are supported in Zanzibar, in Mbozi, Mbeya or Isoko and in many other institutions of the Moravian Church. The locations and uses can change on short notice depending on the need. We are in close contact with the project leaders on site and react quickly to upcoming needs.
Einsatz für Waisen und benachteiligte Kinder in Mbeya
Example: Scholarship (orphan) program in Zanzibar
"Today is a special day for our congregation," said Mayor Sheha Hamisi at the celebration of the launch of the Moravian Scholarship Program in Mwera, Zanzibar. "We are extremely happy that we were able to realize this major project thanks to Herrnhuter Missionshilfe." In the meantime, nearly 60 orphans, half-orphans and other needy children attend the kindergarten and school at the Herrnhuter Academy School. They are cared for, supported and provided with food. New requests for a place in childcare reach the mayor every day.
"The need is very high, and we would like to take in many more children. However, we cannot raise the funds for this on our own. There is a database in which all children are listed. Together with the principal of the Herrnhut Academy School, I decide which child will be admitted." Most of the time, the two know the families and their circumstances and strive to select those most in need. Herrnhuter Missionshilfe would like to help so that more orphans can get a place at the Herrnhuter Academy School and thus look forward to a safer and happier future.
Example: Scholarship (orphan) program in Isoko, Tanzania
"I want the children to learn how to trade in goods and earn their own money," says Enea Kajange, head of the scholarship program that Herrnhuter Missionshilfe supports in Isoko. "After their school education, our protégés are usually left to fend for themselves," says the trained nurse.
That's why she runs her own chicken farm with the children in the southern highlands of Tanzania and sells eggs and meat at the market. "Our dream is to have our own incubator to raise chickens. But we just don't have the necessary money," Enea said. With funds from Herrnhuter Missionshilfe and especially thanks to the great support of individual partners, Enea and her mainly AIDS orphans will be helped. People in the area around Isoko learn about the Herrnhuter Missionshilfe project through word-of-mouth.
"I don't have to advertise our facility," Enea reports. "When people are satisfied, they tell each other and then come to me when needed. I'm very proud that people trust me, and I'm happy that we can help many needy children thanks to the support of Herrnhuter Missionshilfe." The trained nurse cares for 100 orphans, half-orphans and other children. The vast majority of them have lost their parents to HIV/AIDS. Before a child is accepted into the scholarship program and can enjoy a school place, school uniform, books, pencils and his or her own school bag, an application must be submitted, which is checked for accuracy by Enea at the mayor's office. "Checking each application is important to me because I only want to help the children who really need help," says Enea.

Girls need education - vocational training in Zambia
Project Pictures
The economic situation in Zambia and Tanzania is poor and unemployment in the countries is high. Youth unemployment in particular is a major problem. Almost two-thirds of the working-age population are young people, and just under a quarter of them are unemployed, according to World Bank estimates. The situation is particularly problematic for women and girls. They often have no opportunity to attend school or even learn a trade to secure their own livelihood. In the traditionally male-dominated society, they have little decision-making power. They have to help out in the household at an early age, often marry at a young age, have their first child at an early age and then have no opportunity to finish school or even start vocational training. The central issue in enabling girls and young women to lead a self-determined life and earn their own living is therefore to offer them a real chance on the labor market.
Training at a vocational training center significantly increases the chances of girls and women. The goal of the training is employment or even self-employment. The young women then earn their own income and secure their livelihood. They are economically independent of outside help and can make their own decisions and shape their lives in a more self-determined way. Vocational training is thus a sustainable investment in the future of women and in a self-determined and dignified life, and in the long term can change and shape the role image of women in society.
HMH has been supporting women and girls through scholarships for many years. These vocational training scholarships are designed to support women and girls until the end of their education. In addition to the school fees, it also includes the costs for the state examinations (VETA exams), food, health care, school materials and, if necessary, travel and accommodation costs and other expenses incurred during the training. In this way, the young women can complete their vocational training independently of any economic support and complete it without financial pressure, thus significantly increasing their chances on the labor market. The practical experience gained in the workshops facilitates the transition to everyday working life.
In addition, the successful graduates receive a tool kit, a basic set of tools (sewing machine, screwdriver, initial equipment of materials, etc.), which makes it easier for them to become self-employed and gives them the necessary start-up support. At the same time, the incentive to successfully complete the training is significantly increased by the graduation tool kit. This brings them another big step closer to their goal of employment or even self-employment.
The cost of a two-year scholarship including the tool kit at a vocational training center in Tanzania or Zambia is 1,000 euros.

Tool kits for graduates of vocational training centers
Project Pictures
In many poorer countries such as Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi or India, young people face a major hurdle after completing their vocational training: they have learned the necessary skills, but without financial resources and the right tools, the path to self-employment often remains closed to them.
Young women are particularly affected by this, as they often lack any support to build their own livelihood. This is precisely where your donation makes a crucial difference: with so-called tool kits – which include sewing machines, tools or materials – you enable these young people to realize their professional dreams and lead independent lives.
One impressive example is Enitha Boaz from Tanzania. The 26-year-old reports: “Before I received the support, I had lost hope of a self-determined life. Without professional skills and financial resources, it seemed impossible to achieve my dreams and goals.” But thanks to a scholarship from Herrnhuter Missionshilfe, she was able to complete her training as a seamstress at the Namtumbo Moravian Vocational Training Center. With the Tool Kit that she received after her training – including a sewing machine, scissors, needles and some fabric – she set up her own business and opened a small tailor shop in her village. Today she is proud to earn enough for herself and her family. “The Tool Kit has completely changed my life. Now I am not only independent, but I can also help others by giving them work in my tailor shop,” she says gratefully.
For many, this start-up assistance means more than just the opportunity to start a business. It gives them hope, independence and the chance to escape poverty. Your donation has a direct impact on the lives of these young people.
Every donation for these tool kits makes a huge difference.
A sewing machine or basic equipment for electricians, for example, costs between 150 and 200 euros. If possible, the graduates or their families pay for part of the tool kits, but often this is not possible.
