Heavy rainfall and flooding have further exacerbated the already difficult living conditions of many people in several regions of Albania. The region of Lezha, where numerous families live in very basic or temporary accommodation, has been particularly affected. Even normal rainfall causes major problems there, but the current floods have been much more severe than usual. Many families in Pogradec and Burrel are also affected, including people who live in former school dormitories or other unsafe buildings and have hardly any savings. Many of those affected are currently unable to support themselves because they have lost their usual small sources of income due to the persistent rainfall. Urgent food aid is therefore needed most of all on the ground. A food package costs around 35 euros and provides concrete help to a family. We kindly ask for your support so that this emergency aid can be implemented. Donations can be made to Herrnhuter Missionshilfe e.V., IBAN DE25 5206 0410 0000 4151 03, BIC GENODEF1EK1, reference Nothilfe. Thank you very much for your solidarity.

Myanmar was recently hit by a major earthquake that caused considerable destruction. Thousands of people have lost their lives and many families are homeless, without access to essential food, clean water and medical care. Brother Tin Aungshwe, a member of the Moravian Church in Yangon, is urgently appealing for support for the affected congregations. At least USD 20,000 is needed to provide immediate relief and aid reconstruction. These funds are crucial to provide shelter, ensure medical care and distribute basic relief items such as food and water. Every donation will be used directly for this Emergency Aid and will help to save the lives of the people affected and support the reconstruction. We thank you for your help and support during this difficult time. Please send donations to Herrnhuter Missionshilfe e.V., DE25 5206 0410 0000 4151 03, keyword “Emergency Aid Myanmar”.

Herrnhuter Missionshilfe has an emergency aid fund from which help can be provided quickly and unbureaucratically when needed. It often takes a long time for sufficient donations to be collected in Germany for an emergency situation in other parts of the world. However, people need immediate help such as food or tents, for example, after an earthquake or a hurricane. In order to be able to help quickly, Herrnhuter Missionshilfe has set up an emergency aid fund. This fund is used to provide aid directly after a disaster. Donations are then solicited for this disaster and, if possible, the direct aid from the emergency aid fund is refinanced by the donations.

Only when the emergency fund is well filled can we provide emergency aid at short notice. Helping the poorest of the poor and helping people to help themselves always have priority.

The following is an excerpt of the disasters and catastrophes that have been supported in recent years with the help of the Emergency Aid Fund of Herrnhuter Missionshilfe:

  • Support for local clinics in the cholera epidemic in Zambia in 2024 to improve medical care and prevention.
  • Reconstruction and supply of food and medicine to the victims of hurricane Eta which reached the coast of Nicaragua in November 2020. Many people refused to leave their homes - also for fear of contracting the Covid 19 virus in the confines of the emergency shelters.
  • Series of earthquakes in Albania in November 2019. In a joint effort with the Evangelical Alliance in Albania, which operates one of the relief collection centers in the country, needy families were located and provided with relief supplies.
  • In a major fire during the night of December 30-31, 2018, the entire historic interior of the mission settlement of Wupperthal, South Africa in the Cedar Mountains, about 150 km north of Cape Town, burned down. The buildings of the Red Cedar company, from which Herrnhuter Missionshilfe purchased its rooibos products, were also destroyed.
  • In September 2017, hurricanes Irma and Maria ravaged large parts of the Caribbean. Homes, churches and school buildings of the Moravian Church on the islands of St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix were also affected.
  • Almost every year there are extreme floods in Malawi, in which sometimes the precipitation of an entire year pours down within a few days. Huge areas are then under water, and hundreds of people die every year in such disasters. The fields and the houses of about countless people are destroyed and the entire power supply is paralyzed. With temporary shelters and basic foodstuffs, initial emergency aid can be provided.
