Palestine

Star Mountain is located about 25 kilometers north of Jerusalem on the important road from Ramallah, the capital of the Palestinian Autonomous Territories, to the young university city of Bir Zeit. On the mountain called Star Mountain is the site of a Rehabilitation center of the same name, which belongs to the worldwide Moravin Church and is called the Star Mountain Rehabilitation Center. Surrounded by Palestinian villages, the center can be recognized from afar by its forest, a rarity in a stony environment. In addition, a sign draws attention to the fact that the Moravian Church takes care of children and young people with disabilities here. The panoramic view from Star Mountain - almost 800 m high - is impressive. It reaches far into the mountain landscape. In the evening, on a clear day, you can even see the Mediterranean Sea in the glow of the setting sun.

News from the projects
Workshop at Starmountain on psychological first aid
On September 16, 2025, a workshop for educational staff was held at the Star Mountain Rehabilitation Center SMRC near Ramallah (Palestine, West Bank). The SMRC collaborated with the Palestinian Ministry of Local Government and the International Rescue Committee (IRC) to organize this workshop. Founded in 1933 on the initiative of Albert Einstein, the IRC helps politically persecuted people and refugees by providing various types of life-saving assistance. Today, the committee has around 24,000 employees in over 40 countries. The workshop focused on psychological first aid for a group of families whose children attend the SMRC. There is now hardly a family in Palestine that has not been personally affected by the war in the Gaza Strip and the unrest in the West Bank. Three pictures here.
Short film about the Sternberg Kindergarten

The Rehabilitation Centre of the worldwide Moravian Church on the Star Mountain (Palestine/West Bank) is promoting its international, inclusive and interfaith kindergarten, which has been housed in new premises for several years, with a 120-second video on Facebook. See here. The film presents the friendly interior and the spacious outdoor area. It familiarises viewers with elements of the daily programme. It shows how children with disabilities are supported and how children of very different ages and backgrounds interact with each other. ‘Discover a world of play, learning, support and community’ is the title of the short film. The Star Mountain Rehabilitation Centre is located on an 800-metre-high green hill in the north of the rapidly growing city of Ramallah, directly on the main road connecting Ramallah to the university town of Birzeit.
First aid course for employees at Star Mountain
At the support center of the worldwide Moravian Church on Star Mountain near Ramallah (Palestine/West Bank), the quiet summertime is gradually coming to an end. On July 22, 2025, the International Medical Education Trust (IMET 2000), based in Great Britain, offered the employees of the support center a free one-day first aid course. Knowledge of life-saving measures and mastery of these measures is essential in critical situations such as those that can occur every day in Palestine. Seventeen employees from all areas of the support center took part. They practiced how to respond to the following emergencies: epileptic seizures, broken bones, bites, unconsciousness, and choking. The training also included realistic practical applications of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of an AED (automated external defibrillator). Four pictures here.
Star Mountain: special classroom for children with autism
In continuation of the previous, extraordinarily fruitful cooperation between the Rehabilitation Center of the worldwide Moravian Church on the Star Mountain near Ramallah (Palestine/West Bank) and the Jerusalem Princess Basma Center for Disabled Children , a coordination meeting was held on May 19, 2025 with representatives from both institutions. The meeting focused on the opening of a special classroom for children with autism on the Star Mountain. This project is being realized with financial and technical support from the Princess Basma Foundation. The aim of the project is to develop very special educational services for children with autism. The management team of the Star Mountain Rehabilitation Center thanked the Princess Basma Foundation and appreciated their commitment to working together in the service of people with disabilities. Some pictures here.
Star Mountain: Once again, a Dabkeh highlight
Hundreds of dance enthusiasts gathered at the Popular Art Center in Ramallah on Sunday, May 11, 2025, for a lively and joyful show. Among them were 15 students from the Star Mountain Rehablitation Center (Palestine, West Bank), who were celebrating the completion of their Dabkeh training, which lasted several months. They and the other course graduates delivered an impressive Dabkeh performance that showcased their artistic abilities. The course graduates also demonstrated their ability to interact with the audience, who responded with enthusiastic applause. The joyful show concluded with the presentation of certificates, which gave due recognition to the commitment, musicality, and athleticism of the course graduates throughout their training. Some pictures here.
Final completion of a major development project on the Star Mountain
The Worldwide Moravian Church Rehabilitation Center on the Star Mountain near Ramallah (Palestine; West Bank) finally completed its project Promoting Inclusivity in Local Congregations through Good Citizenship. The project ran for 15 months in 2024/25 and reached six regions in the Ramallah and Al-Bireh districts (Nalin, Kharbatha Misbah, Beit Luqia, Petunia, Deir Abu Mashal, Qubia). The project was generously supported by the German Society for International Cooperation. The closing ceremony was organized for many of the participating children, their parents and coaches. They gave vivid accounts of their experiences in different areas of everyday life and the knowledge they had gained. The ceremony also included the screening of a short film documenting the project activities and the distribution of certificates to the participating communities. 30 pictures here.
A day of fun for the Star Mountain children
Full of excitement and anticipation, some children from the worldwide Moravian Church Rehabilitation Center on Star Mountain near Ramallah (Palestine, West Bank) went on an excursion on May 6, 2025. This took them to the large Mazaya Mall north of Ramallah, a shopping, cultural and entertainment center. The joint trip there was part of the extracurricular program of the almost 45-year-old support facility. It contributed to the integration of the children with disabilities into society and boosted their self-confidence. On Facebook it said: “Our students were also able to practice shopping in a mall - an opportunity for them to learn life skills in a new environment. Lunch was provided in a relaxed social atmosphere. This meal also helped to foster a spirit of interaction and mutual connection.” Pictures here.
Star Mountain: Afternoon of games towards the end of the fasting month of Ramadan
On the evening of March 29, 2025, the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan ends this year, during which the faithful are obliged to be charitable in a special way. This will be followed on March 30, 2025 by Eid al-Fitr, the festival of breaking the fast. To mark this occasion, two organizations had a surprise in store for the children and young people at the Star Mountain Rehabilitation Center near Ramallah (Palestine, West Bank) on 20 March 2025: The Women's Committee of the “Turmus'ayya Charitable Association” and some children from the Turmus'ayya Girls Secondary School presented the special needs students on Star Mountain with small gifts and organized a series of interactive sports and leisure activities. Turmus’ayya is a town of 4,000 inhabitants just 20 kilometers from Ramallah. Star Mountain has been cooperating with the Palestinian villages in the area since the 1980s. Some pictures here.
Day of prayer for the Star Mountain Rehabilitation Center
The Board of World Mission of the Moravian Church in North America had declared February 6, 2025 - the first Thursday in February - as a day of prayer for the support center of the worldwide Moravian Church on Star Mountain near Ramallah in Palestine (West Bank). Those responsible wrote on Facebook: “Please pray for our brothers and sisters at Star Mountain, especially for the language and occupational therapy offered there, which is specially sponsored by our organization. The center provides rehabilitation and education for children between the ages of 6 and 14, as well as vocational support for 14 to 40-year-olds. Since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas in October 2023, the help offered at Star Mountain has become even more important. Although Star Mountain is not directly affected by the war, the families served by the support center are affected by job loss and transportation problems related to the ongoing conflict. Star Mountain on Palestinian television
On October 19, 2024, the Palestinian TV station Wattan Media Network aired a half-hour interview with Abeer Hamad, head of the rehabilitation department at the Star Mountain Rehabilitation Center (SMRC) near Ramallah (Palestine/West Bank). See here. The topic of the discussion was “Access to protection and services for women with disabilities in times of war”. The long-standing special education teacher emphasized that in times of war and crisis, the violence and challenges faced by women, especially women with disabilities, multiply. Women with disabilities who are subjected to violence are not admitted to emergency shelters. Even the supply of medication to people with disabilities is not guaranteed due to roadblocks set up by the Israeli military. In times of war, no one can hope to have their national and international rights respected.
Interview with Ranya Karam from Star Mountain
At the beginning of October 2024, Ranya Karam, the director of the Star Mountain Rehabilitation Center near Ramallah (Palestine, West Bank), gave an interview to the Brødremenighedens Danske Mission, the Danish sister organization of Herrnhuter Missionshilfe, in which she talks about her dreams and the current situation on Star Mountain. In the interview, she says, among other things: “The current war affects us all. It's really depressing. But when we compare ourselves to the people in the Gaza Strip, we tell ourselves not to be depressed. But in fact we are. At the same time, in a way, we are still blessed because we have food on the table. We We can't go anywhere without worrying.” Read the interview in German translation here.
Star Mountain: Normality in abnormal times

HMH employee Niels Gärtner has recently visited the Star Mountain Rehabilitation Center SMRC near Ramallah, to get an idea of the situation there. He reports: "Everything is actually quite normal. Ramallah is a busy city as usual, the taxis are running, the shops are open and hoping for buyers. The teachers and children of the SMRC who live in this region can also reach the centre as usual. It is more difficult for children and young people who come from remote rural areas, which are often not part of the A-Zone. Here there are repeated checkpoints by the Israeli military and attacks of all kinds. Everything looks normal on the outside, but the souls and hearts are very wounded. The violent images that flood into people's minds every day via television or mobile phone, the helplessness, the fear, the hopelessness, the economic hardship of many families - all of this has eaten deep into people's souls. And yet the SMRC is always a place of laughter and hope for the children and young people. This can be experienced every day thanks to the professional commitment of the staff. The SMRC needs our support in prayer and financially." A brief description of the situation can be found here.
Star Mountain: Action plans formulated to implement the Disability Charter
The Star Mountain Rehabilitation Center SMRC of the worldwide Moravian Church near Ramallah (Palestine/West Bank) never tires of networking with other social work providers in order to help children and young people with disabilities develop as well as possible. Since the beginning of 2024, the centre has been holding talks with local authorities in the area and making site visits. On Saturday, 20 April 2024, the cooperation reached a new, concrete phase. The management of Star Mountain had invited the staff responsible for rehabilitation from six small municipalities in the neighbourhood to put down on paper the action plans needed to implement the UN Disability Charter. See here. This was preceded by the recent codification of a corresponding action plan with the administration of the city of Ramallah.
Star Mountain Association now supports school on the Star Mountain

The Star Mountain Association (Förderverein Sternberg e.V.) is an association of congregations and individuals from the Westphalian Church together with HMH. The Star Mountain Association was founded in 2022 to put the SMRC outpost in Burqin, which was mainly financed by the Westphalian region, on a legally reliable footing. The association is chaired by Niels Gärtner from HMH and Christian Hohmann, a pastor at the oikos Institute specialising in the Middle East, acts as deputy chairman on the Westphalian side. Due to the increasingly violent clashes between settlers and Palestinians, particularly after 7 October 2023, it was no longer justifiable to continue the outpost in the north. The project was therefore cancelled at the end of 2023. As a new task, the association has set itself the goal of supporting the special school on the SMRC itself. Thank you very much!
History
The Moravian Church was asked in 1866 to help care for lepers in Jerusalem and the surrounding area. For this, it already brought experience with leprosy work from missionary work in other continents. In 1888 she took over full responsibility for the work. At the same time, a new, larger hospital was opened in the southwest of Jerusalem, the Jesushilfe. There, deaconesses from the motherhouse Emmaus in Niesky soon took over responsibility and management. This work could be done until 1948 in the Jesushilfe in Jerusalem and from 1960 on the Star Mountain, which belonged to Jordan at that time. In 1979 the care of lepers came to a standstill, because leprosy could be treated with medication in the meantime. As a result, the Moravian Church decided to use the buildings and grounds of Star Mountain for pioneering work with people with disabilities, for whom hardly anyone in Palestine cared at the time.
historical pictures of "Jesushilfe"
150 years of Moravian work in the Holy Land
A small spark becomes a big star. We look back on 150 years of work by the Moravian Church in the Middle East:
On May 30, 1867, the so-called Jesushilfe, an asylum for people suffering from leprosy, was inaugurated at the city wall of Jerusalem. Donated by the noble couple von Kessenbrinck, a Moravian missionary couple was sent to run it. Within a short time the number of lepers increased.
In 1887, the Jesushilfe moved to a new and larger building outside the city. Overall responsibility now lay with the Moravian Church, which also sent deaconesses as staff.
In 1948, after the Arab-Israeli war, many of the patients fled.
In 1950, Jesushilfe was sold to the State of Israel, which initially continued the work among Jewish lepers.
In 1957, it was decided in the Unity Synod to continue the leprosy work in the Jordanian part of Palestine and the site of the present Star Mountain was purchased. But here the work was just beginning. The land had to be terraced and a new hospital built. Many hundreds of trees were planted, which today characterize the image of Star Mountain, providing shade, wood and olive oil.
Then, in 1980, work with people with disabilities began under the direction of a Moravian couple. The new work quickly took root and people with disabilities from villages around Ramallah were cared for, supported and trained in the special school and in outpatient work in the local villages.
In 1998, Rawda Marouf, a Palestinian, took over the management of Star Mountain.
In 2006 an integrative kindergarten opened.
Since 2009, Ghada Naser successfully continued and expanded the work as director.
In 2014, the new vocational support center with several sheltered workplaces as well as meeting and guest areas was inaugurated.
2017 in this year the main building, which was built in 1959, was completely renovated. The 150th anniversary of Moravian work also played a role in the ceremonial commissioning.
2018 Ranya Karam takes over the management of the facility.
All these developments were only possible with the help of supporters from all over the world, for which we are very grateful.
Integrative Kindergarten
The Star Mountain Rehabilitation Center SMRC near Ramallah in Palestine supports people with mental and physical disabilities in the areas of education and training, rehabilitation, integration, inclusion and contributes to changes in awareness in society for the rights of people with disabilities (advocacy). It provides comprehensive special education, physical and occupational therapy services to people with disabilities of all ages. Social workers, physiotherapists and art therapists support the affected families through home visits, contributing to the social integration of people with disabilities into society.
Project Pictures
Here, a very special work is done, because the kindergarten enables educational and support opportunities for children with disabilities in an integrative concept. Children without disabilities also attend the kindergarten. The program includes creative activities as well as speech and physical therapy.
"One of our children has Down syndrome," reports a kindergarten teacher. "When the girl first came to the kindergarten, she was very aggressive toward the other children. After we took intensive time for her and introduced a plan, she has integrated well into the group and is involved in all activities, whether it's crafts, feeding the chickens, baking or playing on the playground."
In addition to the activities, the dedicated staff also engages extensively with parents, making home visits and offering advice on how best to support children in their daily lives. This work can make a lasting difference in the status of people with disabilities in Palestine, as children in kindergarten learn acceptance and openness toward people with disabilities at an early age. Children with a disability have the opportunity to be individually supported and to get a perspective for their later career.

Birthday Party in the School
The special school is attended five days a week (Fridays and Sundays are holidays) by 25 to 30 children and young people with disabilities who come to Sternberg by minibus or car. The disabilities are predominantly mental; some students also have physical disabilities. The severely disabled and children with autism are also cared for and looked after. At the school, the children learn above all to manage their daily lives as independently as possible. The center's services include cross-program physiotherapy, art therapy and sports. An important role is played by parental work, which has both an educational and instructional character. The children and adolescents from Sternberg have won many prizes at national and international art and sports competitions - including the Special Olympics.
