In Tanzania, as in the rest of Africa, a sound education and vocational training are very important. A sound education opens the door to the job market or to independence and offers the chance to shape one's own life in a self-determined way. For this reason, Herrnhuter Missionshilfe (HMH) supports several secondary schools in Tanzania, and we attach great importance to sustainability in their operation.

Mbozi High School is located in the southwest of Tanzania near Mbozi Hospital. The first buildings were constructed between 1982 and 1984. The school is owned by the Moravian Church Tanzania, South West Province.

The school started operating in 1984 for grades 1 to 4. In 2010, it was able to register for grades 5 and 6 (A-level, university degree). 18 teachers and 15 staff members are employed at the school. As in other private secondary schools in Tanzania, the number of students was very high at the beginning, but due to the abolition of school fees, the numbers are rather decreasing.

At the moment, there are about 250 students at the school, and the trend is upward. The modernization of the school has made it more attractive. It was among the top 3 schools in Songwe district in 2019.

The Project

The school's goal is to provide students with a quality education.

The school owns a 100-hectare plot of land with play facilities such as soccer fields and other sports facilities, the best conditions for a healthy learning environment. Part of the land is used for agricultural cultivation. The school is designed for 900 students and thus still offers sufficient capacity.

There are dormitories for girls and boys, enough classrooms, a dining hall with kitchen as well as an administration building, several laboratories and a very well equipped library.

Target groups

The target groups are the students from the surrounding area. They get access to qualified education and can shape their own lives and take responsibility in society.

Project goals

Mbozi High School provides access to higher education.

Orphans receive support for school fees and school equipment as well as additional basic medical care.

The number of students is expected to increase in the future.

Creation of income-generating projects.

Activities

Regular continuing education for teachers

Offer computer and English courses

Scholarship program

Renovations

Cultivation of corn and vegetables, income-generating measures through an existing corn mill

Project progress

In 2018, the renovation of the girls' dormitory began, after which the work continued step by step. Another laboratory had to be built to meet the requirements of the government. The dining hall was in poor condition, the ceiling had to be re-installed and the foundation strengthened.

A big thank you goes to the partnership work of the church district Mühlacker, who among other things installed a solar powered water pump and supported the renovation work as well as the construction of the corn mill, the knodel foundation for the support of many orphans and children and young people from precarious backgrounds, and the donor Dr. Gerhard Haag among others for the support in financing the renovation work as well as the equipment of the school library.

As a result, the school has gained a high reputation in Tanzanian society. It is a privilege to be able to study at the school.

With agricultural projects such as cattle breeding, the cultivation of fruit and vegetables, and the operation of a corn mill, the school generates income and is thus able to cover part of its running costs itself. As a result, the students benefit in the form of a healthier and more varied diet.

Project 1219 Mbozi High School

Lutengano, a remote place in the southwest of Tanzania. Here, Africa is very different from what one imagines. Everything is green, forested mountains surround the place. Lutengano could be a paradise for tourists, but a few hardworking farmers and craftsmen live here in simple conditions.

In the years after 1950 the Lutengano Secondary School was built here. First built as an all-girls school, it was later temporarily used as a school for children with disabilities. Since 1982, boys and girls have been taught together at Lutengano. By the mid-1990s, nearly 1,300 students were completing their secondary education at Lutengano Secondary School. The number of students has varied over the years, and today about 250 students still attend the institution.

In 2018, the school's 6th grade class was awarded a prize for outstanding performance. The teachers under the leadership of principal Israel Kabuka have a vision: "In 2024, our school should have 600 places, because we want to provide even more young people with education, support and hope in the faith of Jesus Christ.
