Zambia: better education services through solar power generation

For decades, Zambia has relied primarily on hydropower for its electricity generation. Recently, however, climate change has led to longer dry spells, which have significantly disrupted the operation of hydropower stations and resulted in numerous power cuts. The government is now turning to solar energy, and the Moravian Church in Zambia is embracing this trend. When the kindergarten and vocational training center VTC in Lusaka were affected by frequent power cuts, the Provincial Board asked its partners in Europe and North America for support in installing photovoltaic panels on several buildings. The American Board of World Mission (BWM) and the German Herrnhuter Missionshilfe (HMH) subsequently joined forces to carry out this project. Electricity – and with it artificial lighting and internet access – has been available to the two Moravian Church institutions in Zambia for some time now, enabling them to provide better educational services. From the ‘Weltweit verbunden’/Mission Festival in Neugnadenfeld

The people of Neugnadenfeld can look back on a joyful, eventful and colourful Sunday, having celebrated their ‘Weltweit verbunden/Mission Festival’ on 5–6 September. The video of the festival service can be viewed here. Songs and testimonies on Saturday evening already provided a glimpse into the worldwide Unity. On Sunday, 50 guests from the partner congregation in The Hague were welcomed; with their distinctive Surinamese charm, they made the day truly special. The service was conducted in a multilingual atmosphere, featuring Dutch, Surinamese, English and German. There was much marvelling at God’s wonderful creation – the theme of the day – as well as plenty of singing, praying and playing. The sight of the many home-baked cakes in the afternoon elicited particular cries of delight from the guests. After a fulfilling day and a blessing for their journey, the guests boarded their coach to return home. What remained was a firm resolution to nurture this newly revitalised partnership even better in future. Pictures here.

A dental team is bringing joy to the Mwanza region

On 28 August 2026, Svend Løbner reported in a post by the Brødremenighedens Danske Mission (BDM) on a visit by a dental team to the Mwanza region of Tanzania. The team of 13 students from Hong Kong provided dental treatment and oral hygiene education in five villages. They also carried out eye tests. “God cares for our bodies just as much as He cares for our souls, which is why we asked the team to provide medical care,” said Reverend Elias Mlewa, Chairman of the Lake Victoria Region of the Moravian Church Tanzania. The young dentists, who were assisted by interpreters, were members of the Wan Chai Church of the Church of Christ in China. The examinations and treatments took place on church premises belonging to the Moravian Church. The patients – between 160 and 180 in each village – lay on church pews or tables. Any reservations some patients had about the young dentists’ age soon disappeared. Read more in Danish here.

The Moravian Church in Nepal has not been directly affected by the floods

The Board of World Mission (BWM) reported on 28 August 2026: “We are grateful that the Moravian Church in Nepal has not been directly affected by the flood disaster on 26 August 2026 on the border with Tibet. The Moravian Church’s centre is located in and around Kathmandu – some distance from the flooded region. Our contacts confirmed today that they are safe and that neither members nor church premises were directly affected … Information from ecumenical partners indicates that a number of churches were damaged and that many pastors, parishioners and others from these communities are missing or have lost their lives. An ecumenical appeal for aid has been launched on the ground to provide food, shelter and other essential support to bereaved and homeless families." Donations for emergency relief are welcome. Wisconsin Rapids, WI: Inner Mission at the laundrette

After two small congregations in the US state of Wisconsin had to be dissolved and their properties sold, the Provincial Board of the Moravian Church in America North decided to use the funds available for parish-based pastoral care projects. Following lengthy discussions at the Wisconsin Rapids Moravian Church, it was decided to use the money to help those who cannot afford to do their laundry in laundrettes (up to 50 US dollars a week, depending on family size). After the project to install public washing machines, tumble dryers and showers in a side room of the church failed due to opposition from neighbours, two parishioners now regularly visit a private laundrette in the town and cover the laundry costs incurred by those in need. Rev. Beth Rohn-Habhegger said: “We are blessed to be able to support people in need.” More here.

Children and young people in the UK with a passion for mission

The Moravian Church British Province is home to the YPMA (Young People’s Missionary Association), which was founded in 1957. It is overseen by the Provincial Youth and Children’s Committee comprising four to six members, and aims to introduce children and young people to the worldwide Moravian Church and to encourage them to engage in missionary activities. In addition, the British congregations of the Moravian Church have young mission collectors, who raised a total of 4,442 British pounds (approx. 5,175 euros) in 2025. Those in charge at the YPMC decided that 2,500 pounds should go to the Moravian Church school in Binnakandi (Assam), in north-eastern India, where the roof had been infested by termites and had collapsed. Furthermore, one of the school’s financial backers had withdrawn their support, meaning that the teaching staff had to work without pay for a time. A further 3,650 pounds (4,250 euros) is to be donated to the mission hospital in Sikonge (Tanzania, Western Province), which is over 100 years old. More here (page 100).

Bethlehem Moravian College now has a mascot

Bethlehem Moravian College in Malvern, St Elizabeth, Jamaica, now has a larger-than-life mascot: an owl in the college’s sky-blue colours. The vocational college, which was founded in Newport in 1861 by Moravian missionaries and is of national significance, proudly presented Arhie the Owl. The college management wrote on Facebook: “The owl – more specifically, the little owl, the city bird of ancient Athens – symbolises wisdom, strength and pride in our institution. Archie embodies the heart of Bethlehem Moravian College. He accompanies students on their path to success and cheers us on at every stage of our learning journey.Whether in class or at events on campus – Archie is always ready to instil energy, confidence and a sense of togetherness. Keep an eye out for Archie during your next visits to the college campus. And don’t forget to take a photo with him if you spot him!” See here.

Ten years of working to provide clean drinking water to communities in Cuba

For more than ten years, the Board of World Mission (BWM) has been working with various congregations in Cuba to provide people in rural areas with clean drinking water. In Cuba, drinking water wells are sometimes located right next to chicken farms, with the result that water used for drinking, cooking and bathing becomes dangerously contaminated. To remedy this health hazard, the Moravian Church has installed ten water filtration systems in Cuban communities. These are not located in individual homes but in central locations, so that many people can access clean water and members of the Moravian Church can engage in conversation with others. Once the filter systems have been installed by foreign specialists, they are operated and regularly maintained by local residents. More here.

New cold-water pump installed at the Deaconesses’ Home in Paramaribo

There is good news from the Deaconesses’ Hospital in Paramaribo, Suriname, which is largely supported by the Moravian Church. The urgently needed new Biral cold-water pump for the air-conditioning systems in two operating rooms has now been commissioned. The Zeister Zendigsgenootschap (ZZg) has contributed 5,000 euros towards this upgrade. It would like to thank those whose donations made this contribution possible. The new pump ensures the circulation of cooled water within the ventilation system of the large, modern building. At the same time, the cooled air is filtered and thus purified. Dr Clyde B. Cairo, the managing director of the Diakomnissenhaus, said at the commissioning ceremony: “Cooling the operating rooms makes an important contribution to the safety of patients, doctors and nursing staff. The system enhances the quality of our work.” Pictures here.

Great success at a taekwondo championship in Kathmandu

Once again, numerous children from the International Kindergarten & Shristi Academy of the Moravian Church in Kathmandu-Baneshwor, Nepal, enjoyed tremendous success at a sporting competition. They brought home 12 gold medals, 8 silver medals and 7 bronze medals – a total of 27 medals. An incredible achievement! You are now true champions! Please keep it up, keep improving and continue to shine! Your school is proud of you." Twelve photos here.
