| | | | New delivery of relief supplies for the “Clinica Evangelica Morava” | | |
In early September 2025, a long-awaited shipment of medical equipment and supplies arrived at the Clinica Evangelica Morava in Ahuas, Honduras. Getting the container to its destination in La Mosquitia was no easy task: from the sea across the lagoon and inland. The donated items included dozens of hospital beds to replace rusty and worn-out beds, thousands of syringes, and other essential relief supplies. The clinic said, "We thank God, our brothers and sisters from the Moravian Church, and the Board of World Mission in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, which loves the Mosquitia so much. The donation will help save lives and improve the situation of many people in need." The organization Hospital Sisters and Rick Nelson, who has worked at the clinic for most of the last 30 years, helped with this relief supply transport. 20 impressive pictures of the difficult transport can be found here. |

| | | | Students learn responsibility for nature and for each other | | |
“At the Moravian Church's Mlimani Theological College in Sumbawanga, Tanzania (Rukwa Province), theology and sustainability go hand in hand. We have a good relationship here, both at school and with nature. This provides fertile ground for peaceful coexistence.” That's what the new head of the college, Emmanuel Adam Sikazwe, thinks. On the connection between peace and nature conservation, he says: "God created everything, not just humans. Humans are responsible for ensuring that creation thrives, that there is peace, care, and security for nature too. That's why we who study here at the college must protect the environment. Without preserving creation, there can be no peace. At the college, students therefore also learn to grow their own vegetables sustainably. This has a deeper meaning." There are currently 26 men and seven women studying at the college. There are three courses of study: evangelism, theology in two years (certificate), and theology in three years (diploma). From an article by Svend Løbner from BDM in Denmark. See here. |

| | | | Eight months after the sewing school in Sumbawanga was relaunched | | |
In February 2025, 16 young women from the Rukwa and Lake Tanganyika provinces of the Moravian Church in Tanzania began a two-year training course as dressmakers at the reopened sewing school in Sumbawanga. The school had to close in 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Two pictures here. In these regions, only a few young women have access to vocational training. The women learn sewing and tailoring as well as the principles of entrepreneurship. They also practice living together, as they live on a training campus, sharing everyday life with each other and also praying and celebrating worship services together. After two years, the women receive their own sewing machine so that they can start a small business and earn an independent income. In this way, they not only create a better future for themselves, but also for their future families. The head of this training branch is the seamstress and teacher Tukulamba Mwakaniemba. See an article by the Zeister Missionsgesellschaft ZZg here. |

Svend Løbner from the Mission Organization of the Moravian Church in Denmark BDM introduces four students at Mlimani Theological College in Sumbawanga, Tanzania (Rukwa Province) in an online article. See here. Sarah Mwimanze (23) has been attending the evangelism course for nine months. She says: “I now have more self-confidence and the courage to speak in front of an audience. Yes, it is common for women to teach children, but now I can also teach adults, including men.” Pasko Kalunga (37) has been studying theology for six months: “I want to use my pastoral work to change local communities so that people don't just do what they are used to doing, but develop further.” George Sikara (46) has been a pastor for seven years, but now wants to study theology so he can better lead his congregation. His thesis is: “Good theology creates healthy communities.” Emmanuel Mkwizo (27) is studying theology in the diploma program. He wants to follow in the footsteps of his father, who was an evangelist. |

| | | | From the 2025 Mission Feast of the Moravian Church in the Netherlands | | |
Despite the rain, the annual central mission festival of the Moravian Church in the Netherlands on September 20, 2025, at Schwesternplatz in Zeist was once again an important gathering, especially for people with Surinamese roots. The theme was: Living everywhere, at home nowhere. Sisters and brothers, groups from the diaspora, and many ecumenical guests were present. Young and old enjoyed the services, the singing, the bazaar, the youth program, and the delicious Surinamese food. In a talk show with host Daniël Claas and his guests Hesli Pansa and Henna van Hell, the meaning of the term “diaspora” was discussed. Video here. You could contribute your questions to the talk show. In a Speakers' Corner with Johan Herbert and Renée Wezel, many stories about feeling at home were shared. Lots of pictures and some videos from the mission festival can be found here and here. |

| | | | Children in Suriname learn the difference between teasing and bullying | | |
In the schools of the Moravian Church in Suriname, students and teachers regularly ask themselves: Is this still teasing or is it already bullying? The two are not so easy to distinguish. That is why the Moravian school foundation (Stichting Onderweijs der EBGS) is using a study by Nathalie Hoekstra to create several posters for students, teachers, and internship supervisors that explain the difference between harmless teasing and dangerous bullying in an age-appropriate way. Three posters were developed for grades 1 to 3, grades 4 to 6, and grades 7 to secondary school. When the posters were presented in schools, there was a week against bullying. Here is the link to Nathalie Hoekstra's essay in Dutch. And here is the link to the free material folder of the “We Learn Academy", where the posters can be downloaded free of charge in high resolution. |

| | | | From the “Teachers' Days” of the Moravian Church in Suriname 2025/26 | | |
At the beginning of each school year, the Moravian Church School Foundation in Suriname organizes so-called MTDs (Moravian Teacher's Days). In the 2025/26 academic year, the MTDs will not take place at a central location, as was the case last time, but in four regions. This is intended to accommodate teachers who sometimes find it difficult to travel from the vast, sometimes inaccessible tropical interior to the capital Paramaribo for two days. The school foundation has therefore invited teachers to the four school clusters of Brokopondo, Upper Suriname, Upper Marowijne, and Upper Saramacca on September 24 and 25, 2025. A total of 1,397 teachers currently work at the 65 schools of the Moravian Church in Suriname, teaching around 13,000 children and young people. A few impressions from the start of the MTDs on September 24, 2025 here. |

In September 2025, Spes Inamukozi, head of the education department of the Moravian Church in Burundi, presented schoolchildren in numerous communities with notebooks, pens, bags, and other useful items. In Gitega, Karusi, Buhumuza, Mukoni, Muyinga, Nyarunazi, and Giteranyi, he admonished the children to behave properly at school. He reminded parents of their duty to provide their children with a Christian upbringing. Spes Inamukozi also honored those children who had been particularly successful in their exams after 9th grade (admission to secondary school) or after secondary school (admission to university). Orphans and other disadvantaged children received scholarships from the Moravian Church to continue their education. The children showed their determination to study hard in order to achieve good results. Emmanuel Girukwishaka, the pastor of the congregation in Mukoni, expressed his gratitude on behalf of the congregation for the support they had received. Pictures here. |

| | | | Fourth marriage seminar in Rukwa Province: “It was like being in a marriage clinic.” | | |
A report by Svend Løbner from the mission organization of the Moravian Church in Denmark BDM dated September 26, 2025, deals with the last of four seminars for couples in the Rukwa province of Tanzania. See here. First, we hear about Agatha and Ibrahim, who married seven years ago and already have two children together. They attended the seminar to prepare themselves for possible crises in the unlucky seventh year of marriage, and they had a good time during the seminar sessions. Seminar No. 4 ended with a big celebration: eleven couples who had been living together without a marriage certificate decided to get officially married. There was a wonderful wedding celebration. It is good to acknowledge crises in a relationship and work on dealing with disputes in a careful manner, said one of the participants: “It was like being in a marriage clinic. This week has healed our marriage.” |

| | | | The focus of church services in Cuba: praise of God | | |
Despite the country's difficult economic situation, praise to God is always at the center of the services celebrated in the Moravian Church in Cuba. This was mentioned in a Facebook post by the Moravian Congregation Ebenezer (Hebrew for "stone of help") in the city of Santa Clara. A video of the song “God, I give you my life and my praise,” which was sung during the service on September 28, 2025, can be found here. In the congregation in Santa Clara, as in the congregation in the capital Havana (Congregación Belén de la Iglesia Morava en Cuba), there is regularly a time of surrender or devotion to Christ, the “King of Kings and Lord of Lords,” as the liturgy says. See here. The members summarized their experiences in Havana as follows: “We pray, praise, encounter the Word of God, and experience a powerful manifestation of the Holy Spirit.” |

| | | | From South Africa's "Heritage Day" on September 24, 2025, in Genadendal | | |
South Africa's Cultural Heritage Day was proudly celebrated in the center of Genadendal with the event Roots in the Valley of Grace. A delicious potjiekos competition (African beef stew) tested the taste buds, a pop-up market offered beautiful things to buy, and visitors could view an exhibition of medicinal plants and art, as well as watch the inspiring film Riel. Afterwards, Facebook reported: "It was a day of culture and history. Together with Reweaver's Studios, the Rietdakkombuis restaurant, the Association of Friends of the Mission Museum, and Humane World for Animals, we celebrated the stories, flavors, and traditions that keep our valley alive. Thank you to everyone who was there! It was an unforgettable day. Where there is jasmine, there is hope. Where there is history, there is healing. Not every story needs to be told. In our valley, silence blooms louder than words." Many pictures here. |

| | | | News from Nunatsiavut, formerly Labrador | | |
Jan Dicker from Nain and Jacob Dyson from Makkovik were part of the volleyball team from the Newfoundland/Labrador region. They enjoyed leaving northern Labrador by plane to travel to St. John's, where the 2025 Canada Summer Games took place in August. A longer article by the CBC, which recounts the qualification process for these championships and describes the training efforts, can be found here. Of the 80 volleyball players from the region, only twelve made it into the Games selection. To help the region around Nain, Labrador, move away from diesel, the foundation stone for two large wind turbines and a battery storage system was laid in July 2025 after two years of planning. Read more about the Nain Wind Micro-Grid Project here. In general, the Inuit in Nunatsiavut, the new name for parts of Labrador, are very committed to nature conservation and the fight against climate change. Read more about this and the dramatic climate change in this region in a newspaper article by The Independent here.
